30 questions to ask your parents or grandparents before it's too late
Published on 28 September 2026 · 7 min read
You don't need a perfect plan to start. Just one question, and really listening to the answer. Here are thirty to get going today.
There's a question many people ask themselves too late: “why didn't I ask more?” An older person's life holds decisions, vanished trades, love stories, moves, and moments that have never been said out loud because no one ever asked.
You don't need to turn it into a formal interview or record for hours on end. Just pick one question, sit down without rushing, and let the answer come at its own pace. These thirty questions are meant to open the conversation, not exhaust it in one afternoon.
Childhood and family
What was the house where you grew up like? Who did you share it with? What's your happiest memory before you turned ten? What games did you play when there was no television or screens? What were your parents like, and what did you admire most about them? What smell or sound takes you straight back to your childhood?
Youth and lessons learned
What did you want to be when you were young, and what actually happened? What was your first job, and how much did you earn? Which teacher or person shaped the way you think? Was there a moment when you had to be truly brave? What difficult decision did you make before you turned twenty-five?
Love and starting a family
How did you meet your partner? What do you remember about your wedding day, or another especially happy moment as a couple? What did you expect from life when your first child was born? What are you proudest of about the family you built?
Work and trade
What was a normal working day like for you? What trade or tool from your time barely exists anymore? Was there a colleague or boss you remember especially well? What professional achievement are you proudest of, even if it seems small?
Memory of the country and the era
What changes have you seen that feel unbelievable compared to your childhood? Do you remember any historical event you lived through up close? What was Christmas, a wedding, or a local festival like in your town or neighbourhood? What food reminds you most of home?
Reflection and legacy
What advice would you give someone starting out in life now? What would you like your grandchildren to know about you fifty years from now? What are you proudest of, looking back? Who helped you when you needed it most, and how? Is there something you've never told anyone that you'd like to leave said?
How to use this list
You don't need to answer all of them, or follow the order. Any sensitive topic can be skipped without explanation: the point isn't to complete a list, it's to open a door. If the conversation falls short one day, it can always continue another.
At Vozever we start from a similar idea, but with 120 questions already prepared, organised by theme and designed to be recorded calmly, one at a time. The family reviews the answers afterwards and decides what to turn into chapters of a book that can also be listened to, in the real voice of whoever told it.
